| Anyone who plays an instrument knows that
eventually you need to do a certain amount of maintenance on it. Acoustic
instruments can be victims of neglect, accidents or the ravages of time. In any
event, Homestead Pickin' Parlor is ready to help out with any repair or maintenance needs
you might have. Some things are easy for us, and we
can either do them on the spot or within a few days. Light setup, string changes,
and neck tension rod adjustments are examples.
For more extensive work, our repair person is
Barry Densch. He will take orders for repairs in the order in
which they come to the shop.
Barry is an Fully Authorized Martin
Guitars Service Center. (He's really a person, but Martin gave him
this title, so there you go.)
Here is Barry's biography.
Barry
Densch, Luthier
Barry Densch made his
first classical guitar in the winter of 1977 under the apprenticeship of
master luthier, A. Osman Tilev. After working with Mr. Tilev for a year,
he opened a small shop, Astrid Guitars in downtown Chicago. The quality
of Barry’s worked allowed him to become an authorized warranty repair
center or Ovation, Gibson and C.F. Martin & Co.
Barry made and repaired
instruments for a period of eight years. At that time, he put down the
tools of his craft to pursue other career opportunities. Astrid Guitars
was closed down in 1986 and Barry started working as a research technician
at Northwestern University.
In 1995, yet another
career move - an opportunity in the seemingly lucrative field of
information technology presented itself to Barry. He continued that
career path following a move to Minneapolis until 2005.
Since the closing of
Astrid Guitars, Barry had been suffering from artistic deficiency syndrome
(don’t go rushing to your medical dictionary) and missed using his earlier
developed skills to create and repair acoustic instruments. Yet another
door opened for him in 2006 and his career path has come full circle.
Luthiery and repair is once again his full time enterprise.
Barry is delighted to be
pursuing his original career and finds it fulfilling to be able to
exercise his creativity on a daily basis. He looks forward to an
opportunity to put his skills to work for you.
