Classic Hot Rize with Red Knuckles & The Trailblazers

You can't go back, but a nostalgic trip down the road you've traveled will be a foregone conclusion while watching this DVD of a performance of Hot Rize and their alter egos, Red Knuckles & The Trailblazers recorded live on July 28, 1987. The bands were filmed at the Kentucky Center for the Arts in Louisville, KY.

Hot Rize was a seminal gathering of world class urban Bluegrass musicians who at the time of this recording were near the top of their game and arguably the most popular Bluegrass band in the country. The trail they blazed has since been traveled by such groups as Alison Krauss and Union Station, Nickel Creek and Blue Highway among others. With a total of 19 songs offered by Hot Rize and Red Knuckles and interviews with Tim and Red, this DVD will delight all of us Hot Rize/Red Knuckles fans and fill in a void for those who never had the pleasure of enjoying their music.

The Dillards: A Night in the Ozarks

Subtitled, “An Audiolithograph, The Video Documentary”, this DVD was filmed live in a Salem, Missouri farmhouse.  The viewing audience is invited into the living room as the boys rehearse for a show.  The spirited live performances of some of their best-known songs reveal an exciting inside view into the great Ozark Mountain bluegrass music style and sound that has been so characteristic of, and unique to, the Dillards.

Jim Hurst, Tim Stafford & Bryan Sutton: Live in Nashville

A production of Flatpicking Guitar Magazine, Hurst, Stafford and Sutton are joined by special guest, Ronnie Bowman in a concert recorded in Nashville on May 22, 2003.  Bowman’s vocals are highlighted as the three acoustic guitar masters hold forth instrumentally.  Their respective song writing talents are also featured as each presents a variety of songs and tunes they have written during their distinguished careers.  Many right and left hand close-ups for the guitar playing viewers.

A 2-Disc set which is a must for Alison Krauss fans.  Over 3 ½ hours of footage . Disc One is all concert footage and includes 23 songs.  Disc Two includes exclusive interviews with Alison and the band, behind-the-scenes footage and over 150 rare and unreleased photos and home videos.  A video of “New Favorite” is also included on disc two as well as a tribute to Frank Edmondson known best to fans around here as the sound man and bus driver for Hot Rize.  The concert was filmed at the Lousiville Palace in Louisville, KY

Bluegrass Roots: Music Makers of Blue Ridge

 

Originally a TV special aired in 1965 on PBS, “Bluegrass Roots” was shot in documentary style by a young David Hoffman.  David follows Bascom Lamar Lunsford as he casts the talent for his Asheville Mountain Music Festival.  The film features some of the finest singers, players and dancers from the Bluegrass mountains.  Songs peformed include “Groundhog”,  “Johnson Boys”, “East Virginia Blues”, “Blue Ridge Mountain Blues” and Lunsford’s own classic “Mountain Dew”.

Did anyone ever know the real Jimmy Martin?  In an effort to capture the phenomena that was Jimmy Martin, the producers of this documentary followed him on tour for a period of two years.  You get to see Jimmy onstage, backstage and on the road.  By including vintage photos, unreleased live recordings and rare historical footage, you will probably get as close as possible to understanding the essence of the man and his music.  Interviews with Rlph Stanley, Marty Stuart, Tom T. Hall, Bill Emerson, J.D. Crowe and others are included.

The Middle Spunk Creek Boys

No band name is as synonymous with Bluegrass music in he Upper Midwest than The Middle Spunk Creek Boys.  The band as is existed on February 21, 2004 is joined in concert by thirteen former members at the Cedar Cultural Center to provide an evening of nostalgia-grass.  The hair may be a little grayer, the waistlines a mite wider but the musical journey from 1968 to 2004 make for a most enjoyable evening of Bluegrass.  A must for Minnesotans past, present. and wannabee.

The Nitty Gritty Dirt Band

Will the Circle be Unbroken: Farther Along

 

Few of us will ever get over the fact that the cameras were not rolling when the NGDB’s milestone album “Will the Circle be Unbroken” was recorded.  But, better late than never.    On “Farther Along”, the Dirt Band is joined by a host of Nashville notables Rosanne Cash, Del McCoury, Irish DeMent, Jerry Douglas, Vince Gill, John Hiatt, Alison Krauss and Earl Scruggs among others.  Vassar Clements and Jimmy Martin who have since gone on before us appear in “Farther Along”.     14 Cuts include the “Will the Circle be Unbroken” grand finale.  Lots of extra features will, for a while, make you forget about that video that might have been.
